Why is personal property (cars, boats, and business equipment) tax revenue important?

Personal property taxes account for 13.8% of the St. Charles City-County Library’s revenue, generating approximately $3.6 million annually. Eliminating this revenue source, without enacting a new tax to replace lost funding, would have significant service impacts that would result in:

  • Branch closures

  • Reduced early childhood literacy programming

  • Significant cuts to the collection budget, leading to fewer new books, longer wait times, and reduced access to eBooks and eAudiobooks

  • Impacts to Library to You services, including delivery to nursing homes and senior centers, and home delivery for individuals

  • Fewer early childhood center visits and reduced Bookmobile stops
