Author of the Week
Jane Austen wrote classics of romantic fiction. Her memorable characters, witty dialogue, and keen commentary on class issues are easily accessible to modern readers. Her novels revolve around domestic manners, male-female relationships, honor, duty, and societal rules. More than simple "love stories," the damaging influence of love is depicted as well as its bright side. Honor wins, the wicked do not gain what they wish (even if they gain what they were after), and as with all good Cinderella stories, the deserving end up happy. Start with: Pride and Prejudice.
