Checkout Period Changing July 1

Article Date
June 24, 2026

Beginning July 1, the St. Charles City-County Library will update the standard lending period for physical items from 2 to 3 weeks

This change results from listening to user feedback that better aligns the Library with other checkout periods in the region. It is also more in line with the checkout period for eBooks and eAudio in hoopla, and the options available within Libby. Updating the checkout period also gives customers more time with high-demand items that can’t be renewed if they're on hold by other customers.

What do You need to Know?

This change will automatically take place beginning Wednesday, July 1, 2026, and only affects physical items from the Library - digital loan periods are not changing.

  • If you check out items before July 1, the loan period is 2 weeks, and the existing due date remains unchanged. The change only happens to items checked out or renewed beginning July 1.

  • You can renew your loan 3 times beginning July 1 if the item is not on hold by someone else.

  • If an item renews beginning July 1, it renews using the new lending policy. Example: A book has been renewed twice before July 1. If it renews again on or after July 1, it will be renewed for three weeks for the third and final time.

  • Items affected include all physical materials that currently have a 2-week checkout period, including video games, movies, music, and Library of Things.

What doesn’t Change?

  • All digital items’ lending periods remain the same.

  • Most Wanted items still have a one-week lending period.

  • MOBIUS and Interlibrary lending periods remain the same.
